The finest military units in Mukene come from Belltail and nowhere else. Each unit comprises of as few as two and at most twelve members selected from the townpeople at the year of their birth. From an early age they are brought up to stand as the ideal men and women of their people, with a heavy focus on combat, diplomacy, magic, and divinity. When and if they pass through training they are made an official Sacred Band, and are given the relic arms and armor of their predecessors, the last Band to have retired or perished. Each year sees a new band into service and with luck, one retiring, as the number of bands are kept to 20 at all times, although the number of soldiers in service changes from year to year. At this, each group is treated as having strength equal to the next, although areas of deployment vary based on the anticipated danger of encounters.
It is the duty of the Sacred Bands to keep peace in Mukene by subduing the beasts that multiply in the uninhabited wildernesses and by arbitrating between townships and leaders. None living have seen the last time the 20 bands were gathered for a single battle, but the records at the Holy Mountain show this happening a handful of times each century.
